A World Worth Living In: New book explores purpose-driven business through the story of Ramboll

What role should businesses play in creating value for society?

That question sits at the centre of A World Worth Living In: When Business Is More Than Just Business, a new book by Flemming Højbo, initiated by the Ramboll Foundation and published by Strandberg.

The book explores how ideals, responsibility and views on society can shape the development of a business, while contributing to a timely debate about capitalism, values and purpose-driven business.

Taking its starting point in the story of Børge Rambøll and Johan Hannemann, who founded Ramboll in 1945, the book examines a business philosophy built on the belief that commercial success and societal contribution can go hand in hand. For the founders, business was never solely about financial gain. It was also about creating solutions that improved society and people's lives.

A contribution to an important conversation

Through Ramboll's history, the book explores questions that remain highly relevant today: What does it mean to run a business with a purpose? How do organisations maintain an ethical compass in a global and competitive marketplace? And what kind of world should businesses help create?

The book also addresses the dilemmas that arise when values meet reality. From the post-war belief in technological progress to today's discussions about climate change, resource management and social responsibility, it shows how organisations continuously navigate between ideals, market conditions and global challenges.

In addition, A World Worth Living In brings together perspectives from leading international business leaders and experts on foundation ownership, sustainability, responsible leadership and purpose-driven business. Contributors include Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, former CEO of Novo Nordisk, Chia Song Hwee of Temasek, and Connie Hedegaard, the European Union's first Commissioner for Climate Action.

The questions explored in this book are relevant far beyond Ramboll. Around the world, business leaders, investors and societies are debating the role companies should play in addressing major societal challenges. With this book, we hope to contribute to that conversation and inspire reflection on how long-term value can be created for both business and society.
